Cold overnight temperatures have allowed Killington to fire up its snowmaking system in advance of the 2022-23 ski season.
As of daybreak on Saturday, guns were running on Rime and upper Superstar. With marginal temperatures, production may be minimal. Current forecasts at elevation for the next few days show daytime highs in the 40s and nighttime lows in the 20s to 30s.
Killington last had October operations in 2018, when it opened on October 19. The earliest opening on record is October 1, which was most recently achieved in 1997. Last winter's opening day was November 5.
Some New England ski areas may ramp up early season snowmaking this year due to record electric energy prices forecast for December and January.
