Loon Mountain is laying the groundwork for a major expansion as it proceeds with a White Mountain National Forest Environmental Assessment for its Peak 2,324 proposal.
Tying in with its 2007 South Peak and 2023 Timbertown expansions, the new terrain would be predominately located on National Forest land, as well as property owned by South Peak LLC. South Peak LLC also owns the base of the South Peak and Timbertown complexes. The base of the new complex would be served by two detachable lifts, the shorter of which would be open for night skiing. The longer detachable would be either a chairlift or gondola and would have a vertical rise similar to the 1,475 foot Lincoln Express. Two fixed grip lifts would be located elsewhere on the mountain, one of which would serve a racing complex.
145 acres of trails would be cut for all ability levels, augmented with 135 acres of gladed terrain. All trails would be covered with snowmaking. Lighting would be installed on 60 acres of terrain, including Timbertown. Overall, Loon is seeking a 395-acre increase to its special use permit area.
A 15,000 square foot summit lodge would be constructed, as well as a 3,000 square foot lower mountain restaurant and a 2,000 square foot race building. A new maintenance building would be constructed at the far end of the new area.
The 2007 South Peak expansion debuted after nearly a quarter of a century of planning and lawsuits.
